Abstract Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) is an acute respiratory infectious disease caused by Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). Its clinical diagnosis is based on pathogen detection in the laboratory. In this review, we summarize the latest research progress on the methodology of nucleic acid detection, serological detection, virus isolation and genetic variation monitoring of MERS-CoV.
