Abstract Inflammatory bowel disease ( IBD) includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. The pathophysiological mechanism of the disease remains elusive. Abundant data have suggested that intestinal bacteria play an important role in the initiation and development of IBD. Saccharomyces boulardii is one of enteric microbes with beneficial effects on the health of human beings. It has been found to be an effective probiotic in ameliorating the symptoms of IBD and its actions may be associated with inhibiting microbial growth, enhancing gut-barrier function, and/ or modulating immune response of intestinal mucosa.
